PENGUINS

The number of penguin species is debated. Depending on which authority is followed, penguin biodiversity varies between 17 and 20 living species, all in the subfamily Spheniscinae. Some sources consider the white-flippered penguin a separate Eudyptula species, while others treat it as a subspecies of the little blue penguin; the actual situation seems to be more complicated. Similarly, it is still unclear whether the royal penguin is a separate species or merely a color morph of the macaroni penguin. The status of the rockhopper penguins is also unclear.

As categorized below, I have been fortunate to photograph 16 species of penguins (considering Southern and Eastern rockhoppers as distinct). The two major remaining species on my list are Humboldt and Galapagos penguins. Although Northern rockhoppers are considered by some authorities as a distinct species, they look indistinguishable from the other rockhopper species, and visiting them on Gough Island would entail an extremely expensive voyage.

Gentoo penguins around union jack: Port Lockroy, Antarctic Peninsula

Around 5 o'clock in the evening, large numbers of gentoo penguins began landing on the beach to the north west of the Lodge.

In addition to 'straight' shots of penguins, I tried to create images abstracting them from their background using motion blur, de-focus or blowing sand

Skuas are very intelligent birds and work together in pairs to steal penguin eggs. One attacks from the front to distract the penguin, while the other tries to scoop out the egg from behind the penguin. The series of photos below were taken over a five minute interval during which a gentoo penguin valliantly tried to protect its lone egg and drive off the skuas, but ultimately failed. The egg is visible, flying off to the right in the final photo, and was shared by both birds.

LITTLE BLUE (FAIRY)

The little blue penguins (Korora) of Timaru.

The penguins live around the Timaru Port and rock areas. They come ashore after dark on the beach and climb up to nests in the rocks below the marine parade. This is directly across from the harbour, where security lights make it possible to see and photograph the penguins even on a dark night. Volunteer 'penguin wardens' look after the the many visitors who come to watch the penguins, and safely guide those penguins who decide to cross the road and settle under the Maersk containers in the port.

Pairs of royal penguins can be very affectionate with one another, displaying mutual grooming and other gestures. However, in the dense colony the penguins fiercely guard their personal space. Any intruder who tries to nonchanantly barge through the throng faces voiciferous opprobrium, and maybe a hard nip from a beak.
