Cape Disappointment lies at the very south east tip of South Georgia. It was named by Captain Cook when he first discovered South Georgia, initially thinking it might be the fabled Southern Continent. However, after sailing down the southern coast he rounded the cape, discovering that he had merely found a (small) island. Cape Disappoint ment has also been a disappointment for us. Twice, in 2015 and 2017 we have tried to round the Cape to get a look at the wild coast on the northern side of the island; but twice we retreated in face of rough seas and low visibility.
The photos below are from 2017, After sheltering at anchor in Larsen Harbour for the night, we continued our voyage south to Cape Disappointment at the very tip of South Georgia, hoping for a look around the corner to the wild north-west side of the island. But, as with our previous visit in 2015 that was not to be. The ocean conditions were rough and the visibility so low there was nothing to see. We did find a nice rainbow though.
