Near the western tip of the Snaefellsnes peninsula the tiny village of Hellissandur has gained a reputation as the street art capital of Iceland.
In the summer of 2018, a team of international artists including Camilo Arias, Ban Pesk, and Luis Rincon were summoned to Hellissandur by Kári Viðarsson, creator of “The Freezer,” to transform an abandoned fish factory and several unadorned buildings around town into 30 large works of art. The Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption, 2010
|
I took the photo on the left during a visit to Iceland in July 2009, intending it simply as a shot of an a typical Icelandic farm and landscape. Little did I know then that beneath the ice cap in the background lurked the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which would erupt some nine months later. The photo on the right [(c) Olafur Eggertsson] captures the same scene in April 2010, with the gigantic ash cloud that would strand my wife in Europe together with hundreds of thousands of other airline travellers. |
