Something new to photograph at UCI - The construction fences have come down around the Samueli Heath Sciences building. The courtyard at the back is much more interesting than the front, road-facing side.
Heading out for a dawn walk up Turtle Ridge I was initially enveloped in damp mist, but climbed out to find a sea of fog blanketing the LA/Orange County basin, with just parts of the UCI campus and surrounding office buildings visible.
For a few days each year around the Winter solstice light from the rising sun reflects toward UCI from the skyscrapers in downtown LA. Most often they are visible only as a glow through the haze and smog of the LA basin, but on Jan 11 this year remarkably clear air provided an exceptionally sharp view, with downtown LA and the Hollywood sign highlighted below a Delta airlines flight departing from John Wayne airport. The building in the foreground is the Samueli College of Health Sciences, presently under construction.
