January 30th 2022 - UCI in a sea of fog

Heading out for a dawn walk up Turtle Ridge I was initially enveloped in damp mist, but climbed out to find a sea of fog blanketing the LA/Orange County basin, with just parts of the UCI campus and surrounding office buildings visible.

An exceptional view of downtown LA from UCI.

Exceptional view of downtorwn LA and the Hollywood sign from the UCI ecological preserve

For a few days each year around the Winter solstice light from the rising sun reflects toward UCI from the skyscrapers in downtown LA. Most often they are visible only as a glow through the haze and smog of the LA basin, but on Jan 11 this year remarkably clear air provided an exceptionally sharp view, with downtown LA and the Hollywood sign highlighted below a Delta airlines flight departing from John Wayne airport. The building in the foreground is the Samueli College of Health Sciences, presently under construction.

UCI is living up to its name ('Under Construction Indefinitely'), with 4 major construction sites currently active:
a new phase of Plaza Verde housing, new Verano housing, the Samueli
College of Health Sciences, and the new Medical Center and Hospital.

In Irvine we caught only the edge of an 'atmospheric river' that drenched northern California, but enough rain fell overnight to make for some good photos the next mrning. And a few days later, a dense morning fog.

The fountain in the Social Sciences Plaza had been dry throughout the covid pandemic shutdown -
but now it is running again..

A 6:00am walk around campus

October 9th, 2021

An unusually ferocious thunderstorm on Monday night took out power to the campus for several hours; but the downpour left nice reflecting pools when the sky cleared the next morning.

August 22, 2021: A light rain on Saturday morning enticed me to the UCI rose garden.

[After taking these photos I discovered a paper describing that rose petals exhibit a super- hydrophobic state with high adhesive force that stops raindrops from rolling off.]

August 10th, 2021 - early morning walk around campus

August 3rd, 2021 - back to wearing a mask at UCI with surging delta variant. Some miscellaneous photos, some looking down.

July 16th, 2021 - mostly looking up with a wide-angle lens.

The academic buildings had been locked throughout the covid pandemic with key-card access only for those researchers working in a building. Last week arrangements started to return to normal, with buildings unlocked during the day. One building I had particularly hankered to get into was the Engineering Hall, with its glass-enclosed stairway supported by a spectacularly orange framework and topped by an orange inverted Vee structure.

Icons of UCI during covid-19

The cherry trees on campus are at about peak blossom, and starting to shed.

Montage of plaques commemorating UCI graduates from 1966 (the first graduating class) through 2001.
(Click on the image above for a high-resolution version to read each plaque)

These plaques used to be center-stage in the middle of the main plaza by Aldrich Hall, but were unceremoniously moved several years ago when the plaza was re-tiled to form a giant anteater image.
Now they are hidden away on the concrete at a back corner of the plaza; one plaque (1998) has gone missing when the concrete cracked; and no new plaques have been added since the early years of the new millenium. It does seem a little sad that an important part of UCI heritage, is so neglected - one that should document the enormous growth of the campus from 10 bachelors degrees awarde in 1966 to 9404 in 2020.
