Death Valley National Park. March 2010

The bottom of Death Valley is the lowest place in North America, and normally a hot and dessicated salt flat. However, following a Winter with unusually heavy rainfall the basin can fill with water, temporarily recapitulating the ancient Lake Manly. This last happened during the el Nino Winter of 05-06, when the water level rose almost to the roadside. This year the lake was much less dramatic - just a few inches deep in the center of the basin - but photographically was perhaps more interesting. Reflections in a lake are just like reflections in any other lake, but here the shallowness of the water allowed the underlying patterns of crystallizing salt to show through, creating an interesting dual effect with reflections from the water surface.
