Andrea in Antartica

Andrea Silvestri Memorial Award

In July this summer Ian Parker will be participating in the Badwater Ultramarathon, the "World's toughest footrace", attempting a tenth finish. He is dedicating his efforts toward raising funds to support an award in memory of Andrea Silvestri, who tragically passed away on May 19th, 2011.

Andrea was a researcher in the Physics Department at the University of California Irvine, and played a major role in establishing the NSF neutrino telescope at the South Pole. He was the beloved husband of Melanie Matheu, a loyal member of Ian's Badwater support crew over the past six years. Andrea would have joined Melanie on Ian's Badwater crew in 2011.

Melanie has established an award in memory of Andrea, which is administered by the Physics Department at UCI, and is dedicated to promoting undergraduate researcher participation in physics laboratories on the UCI campus.
